The iconic Sony franchise, Killzone, has been on hiatus for some time, but there's a growing chorus of fans and industry figures calling for its revival. Among them is Killzone composer Joris de Man, who recently shared his thoughts on the potential return of the series during an interview with VideoGamer at PlayStation: The Concert Tour.
"I know that there have been petitions for it," de Man stated. "I think it's tricky because, I can't speak for Guerrilla or anything... I don't know if it will ever happen. I hope it will because I think it is quite an iconic franchise, but I also think it kind of has to take into account the sensitivities and the shift in what people want because it is quite bleak in some ways."
The shape in which Killzone could make a comeback is still up for debate. De Man suggested that a remastered collection might be more successful than a brand new entry at this stage. "I think a remastered one would be successful, I don't know if a new game would be as much," he said. "I don't know if people have moved on from it and want something. Sometimes I get the sense that people want something a bit more casual, a bit more quick."
Killzone games are known for their slower-paced, weightier gameplay, contrasting sharply with faster shooters like Call of Duty. Killzone 2, in particular, was notable for its perceived input lag, which affected its responsiveness on the PlayStation 3. Visually and tonally, the series is characterized by its dark, gritty, and muddy atmosphere.
Recent comments from Guerrilla, the Sony-owned developer behind Killzone, suggest that the team has moved on to focus on the Horizon series. However, it's been over a decade since Killzone: Shadow Fall, and the idea of reviving Killzone—or another of Sony's PlayStation shooter franchises—remains an enticing prospect for many fans. While it's uncertain if this will happen, supporters can take comfort in knowing they have allies like Joris de Man in their corner.
