Tidepool Games has just released a fast-paced pixel-art 'snakelike' roguelike on Android. Named MageTrain, fans of Nimble Quest will find the game quite familiar, as it draws significant inspiration from that title.
What’s MageTrain Like?
MageTrain blends Snake, auto-battler, and roguelike mechanics. You guide a line of heroes trailing behind you—just like a snake—as each hero automatically attacks while you dash around the arena.
Your main tasks are positioning your heroes and avoiding collisions with enemies or obstacles. You must strategically decide who leads the pack and who supports from the rear, as each hero’s abilities change based on their position in the train.
At launch, MageTrain features nine distinct heroes (including one who flings birds), each with unique skills that activate depending on whether they're at the front or within the formation.
As you progress, you'll navigate eight unique dungeons, encounter 28 enemy types, and unlock 30 skills to empower your team, all while gathering gold and power-ups along the journey.
With its roguelike design, every run feels different: you follow branching paths, select upgrades, and aim to survive as long as possible.
The structure is reminiscent of games like Slay the Spire or FTL—there are no fixed levels and no mid-run saves. One mistake, whether a collision or being overrun by foes, forces you to start from scratch.
Here's a first look at MageTrain in action.
It Isn’t Slow-Paced
The game’s charm lies in the noticeable skill progression with each attempt, even during losses. You'll learn when to adopt a defensive stance, when to push aggressively, and when to simply fight for another 30 seconds of survival.
MageTrain is now available as a free-to-play title on Android. Head to the Google Play Store to try it out.
