A modder has created a fix for Wuchang: Fallen Feathers PC players who are dissatisfied with the recent changes introduced in Patch 1.5.
Last month, developer Leenzee Games assured fans that numerous performance and optimization issues affecting the game since its release would soon be addressed. While Patch 1.5 resolves many of these problems, it also unexpectedly overhauled many of the game's enemies, dialogue, and story elements.
As previously explained, before the patch, players could target and eliminate certain passive human NPCs encountered throughout the game. Killing these characters influenced the protagonist's "madness" mechanic. Now, however, these NPCs are neither targetable nor killable, removing the option to engage with the madness system in that particular manner. Additionally, boss enemies can no longer be killed, only worn down until they surrender.
Unsurprisingly, these changes have been poorly received. Many players have expressed their frustration on Steam's discussion boards and in user reviews. Just days after the release of version 1.5, a modder produced a modification that completely reverts the game to version 1.4.1, regardless of the potential consequences.
"Wuchang 1.5 significantly downgrades the game experience—most late-game bosses, NPCs, and enemies now become exhausted rather than dying, and they deliver meaningless chatter instead of the story-progressing dialogue from the original," the modder stated. "In essence, patch 1.5 has damaged the game's narrative and immersion."
The mod's creator acknowledged it is a "fairly complex mod that alters game files." Since it also removes some quality-of-life improvements from Patch 1.5, they directed players who wish to revert the story changes while retaining those improvements to additional mods such as Fast Vertical Traversal, Improved Recovery, and Fast Item Pick Up.
Wuchang: Fallen Feathers is a Soulslike action-RPG set in the land of Shu during the chaotic late Ming Dynasty. Players assume the role of a mysterious warrior stricken by a horrific feather disease, uncovering hidden secrets and confronting supernatural foes in an ancient empire on the brink of collapse.
IGN's review of Wuchang: Fallen Feathers awarded it an 8/10, praising it as "another excellent addition to the growing soulslike genre, with superb combat, outstanding level design, an impressive skill tree, and daunting bosses. However, be prepared for sharp fluctuations in difficulty and some reliance on sudden, cheap-feeling ambushes."
