Back in early April, fans of the Nintendo Switch 2 were buzzing with excitement over mentions of variable refresh rate (VRR) on the system's informational pages, which mysteriously vanished soon after. Now, Nintendo has stepped in to clarify the situation regarding VRR on the Nintendo Switch 2.
In a statement provided to NintendoLife, Nintendo confirmed that the initial information about VRR was incorrect. They stated, "Nintendo Switch 2 supports VRR in handheld mode only. The incorrect information was initially published on the Nintendo Switch 2 website, and we apologize for the error." When asked about potential VRR support for docked mode in a future update, Nintendo responded with, "We have nothing to announce on this topic."
This means that, for now, VRR is exclusively available in handheld mode on the Nintendo Switch 2. Gamers using the console in docked mode on their TVs won't have access to this feature at launch.
The clarification comes after much confusion, as the initial mention of VRR was spotted and then quickly removed. Digital Foundry contributor Oliver Mackenzie documented how these mentions gradually disappeared from various sites over time.
While the lack of VRR in docked mode might disappoint some at launch, it's worth noting that there's still hope for future updates. Sony, for instance, rolled out VRR support to PS5 consoles post-launch, suggesting that Nintendo might follow suit with the Switch 2.
In other news related to the Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo recently released a list of games slated for free performance upgrades on the new console. Titles like Pokémon Scarlet & Violet and Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury are among those getting enhancements. Additionally, Nintendo of America's Doug Bowser has reassured fans that the company will have sufficient Switch 2 units to meet demand "through the holidays."
