EA's Next Battlefield Game: A Return to Form
Electronic Arts (EA) has announced that the next installment in the Battlefield franchise is slated for release sometime between April 2025 and March 2026, falling within their fiscal year 2026. This announcement came alongside the unveiling of Battlefield Labs, a new player-testing initiative designed to gather crucial feedback during the game's development.
A brief pre-alpha gameplay reveal showcased the progress, highlighting EA's commitment to player involvement in shaping the final product. This initiative will involve extensive testing across various aspects of the game, from core combat and destruction to weapon balance and map design. Conquest and Breakthrough modes, staples of the series, will also undergo rigorous testing. Furthermore, the class system (Assault, Engineer, Support, and Recon) will be refined to enhance strategic gameplay. Participation in Battlefield Labs requires signing a non-disclosure agreement (NDA).
The development is being spearheaded by Battlefield Studios, a collaborative effort uniting four EA studios: DICE (Stockholm), Motive Studios, Ripple Effect, and Criterion Games. Each studio is tackling specific aspects of the game: DICE is handling multiplayer, Motive is focusing on single-player missions and multiplayer maps, Ripple Effect is tasked with attracting new players, and Criterion is working on the single-player campaign.
This multi-studio approach marks a significant investment by EA, following the closure of Ridgeline Games and the subsequent cancellation of their standalone single-player Battlefield project. The new game represents a return to the modern military setting, drawing inspiration from the highly-regarded Battlefield 3 and 4, abandoning the controversial Specialists system and 128-player maps of Battlefield 2042. The new game will feature 64 players per map. Early concept art hinted at naval and aerial combat, as well as the inclusion of natural disasters.
EA CEO Andrew Wilson described the project as one of EA's most ambitious endeavors. Vince Zampella, Head of Respawn and Group GM for EA Studios Organization, emphasized the importance of recapturing the core Battlefield experience while expanding the franchise's offerings to attract a wider audience.
Specific launch platforms and the game's official title remain unannounced. However, EA's commitment to player feedback and the considerable resources dedicated to the project suggest a determined effort to deliver a successful return to form for the Battlefield franchise.
