Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles is undergoing a thoughtful remaster to bring its beloved world to a new generation of players, with one of the most significant updates being a fully revised script designed to support voice acting. Discover the details behind these changes and why the game will launch in two distinct versions.
A Script Reimagined for Voice Acting
To seamlessly integrate voice acting, the script for Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles has been comprehensively updated. In a June 21 interview with JP Games, original Scriptwriter, Scenario Writer, and Editor Yasumi Matsuno clarified that while the core story remains unchanged, nearly every line of dialogue has been refined to enhance both readability and auditory delivery.
Matsuno emphasized that the remaster aims to "capture everything that made the original 1997 PS1 release so engaging and present it in a modern, accessible format." The updated script adopts a “listening-first” philosophy, ensuring that spoken dialogue flows naturally and aligns with character performances.
He noted, "We’ve made adjustments across almost the entire script to better suit voice acting. This shift was essential to create a more immersive experience for today’s audience." With a touch of humor, Matsuno added, "Some changes might reflect my evolving writing style—or perhaps just my age. If my phrasing feels different, I hope it’s for the better. If not, my apologies."
Bridging Generations with Two Game Versions
The remaster will launch with two distinct modes: the Classic version, which preserves the original look and feel, and the Extended version, featuring enhanced visuals and modernized gameplay elements. This dual-release strategy addresses a key question from fans—why not pursue a full HD 2D overhaul like other Square Enix titles such as Dragon Quest or Live A Live?
In a June 22 interview with JP Games, Director Kazutoyo Maehiro and Art Director Hiroshi Minagawa shared insights into this decision.
Maehiro explained that the goal was to introduce the game to new players while honoring long-time fans. "We knew that presenting the game exactly as it was 30 years ago might not resonate with modern audiences," he said. "That’s why we created the Enhanced version—to offer a fresh, updated experience." At the same time, the Classic version ensures that returning players can relive the original journey just as they remember it.
He added, "Rebuilding the original from scratch might sound simple, but in practice, it’s like developing two games at once. Considering team resources and production costs, this was a major undertaking. But above all, we wanted to give something back to the fans who’ve supported us all these years."
Minagawa revealed that while the team explored using 3D character models and highly detailed environments, they ultimately chose to retain the original art assets. "As we revisited the original game’s graphics, we were reminded of the ingenuity behind how much the developers achieved under such tight technical limits," he said.
The visual approach mirrors HD 2D techniques used in games like Octopath Traveler, though with a unique identity shaped by the original’s coloring and sprite composition. "While the atmosphere differs from other HD 2D titles, the underlying technique is similar," Minagawa noted.
For nearly three decades, Final Fantasy Tactics has held a cherished place in the hearts of strategy RPG fans. With The Ivalice Chronicles, the remaster ensures that both veterans and newcomers can experience its rich narrative and deep tactical gameplay in a way that honors its legacy while embracing the future.
