The developers at Sucker Punch explain their decision to set Ghost of Yōtei in Hokkaido's dramatic landscapes. Discover how they're recreating Japan's northern island and insights from their research trips.
The Strategic Choice Behind Ghost of Yōtei's Hokkaido Setting
Capturing Authenticity Through Real-World Locations

Ghost of Yōtei continues Sucker Punch's tradition of adapting real Japanese locations, this time focusing on Ezo (modern Hokkaido). In a PlayStation Blog post, Game Director Nate Fox detailed why Hokkaido became the backdrop for protagonist Atsu's quest.
The studio drew from their successful adaptation of Tsushima Island in the original Ghost of Tsushima, which earned praise from Japanese critics and cultural ambassadorships for Fox and Creative Director Jason Connell.

Tsushima Mayor Naoki Hitakatsu commended their 2021 work: "Through stunning visuals and deep storytelling, they've introduced our unknown history to global audiences."
Sucker Punch maintains their respectful approach to cultural representation with Ghost of Yōtei. Fox explains their dual purpose: "To balance authenticity with compelling fiction." They selected Hokkaido because "its breathtaking 1603 frontier perfectly frames Atsu's revenge tale." He adds, "If you're staging a ghost story, it demands dramatic scenery."
Nature's Contrast: Serenity Meets Danger

Fox describes how their Japanese research trips became pivotal experiences. Visiting Shiretoko National Park revealed landscapes where beauty coexists with wildlife threats, creating Fox's "ideal blend - serene yet dangerous, exactly our desired atmosphere."

The team also studied Mt. Yōtei ("Machineshir" in Ainu culture), sacred to Hokkaido's indigenous people. This landmark became both symbolic of Hokkaido and representative of Atsu's lost family.
Fox reflects how local interactions enriched their understanding: "These experiences helped crystallize Hokkaido's essence for our fictional adaptation." Recognizing cultural knowledge gaps, the studio plans future disclosures about their collaborative approach.
As Sucker Punch's largest project yet, Ghost of Yōtei arrives October 2, 2025 as a PlayStation 5 exclusive. Stay tuned for further updates on this highly anticipated title.
