Take-Two CEO Confident 'Legacy' Civ Fans Will Embrace Civ 7

Civilization 7's rocky launch hasn't deterred Take-Two's CEO, Strauss Zelnick, who remains confident in the game's long-term success. Despite a "mixed" Steam user review rating and criticism focusing on the user interface, map variety, and missing features, Zelnick believes the core Civilization fanbase will ultimately embrace the game.

The early access release, primarily targeting hardcore fans, has seen vocal feedback highlighting these concerns. Firaxis has acknowledged these issues, promising updates to address the UI, introduce team-based multiplayer, and expand map diversity.

Zelnick points to a Metacritic score of 81 and numerous reviews exceeding 90 as evidence of the game's positive reception. While acknowledging negative reviews, including a harsh 2/5 from Eurogamer, he maintains that the initial apprehension from seasoned players is typical for a Civilization title. He suggests that the game's innovative features, such as the three-age campaign system with simultaneous Age Transitions and civilization choices, will grow on players with continued gameplay. This system, a significant departure from previous iterations, involves selecting a new civilization for each era and carrying over chosen legacies.

However, Firaxis faces the immediate challenge of improving player sentiment, especially on Steam. The platform's user review rating is vital for a game's visibility and success, directly impacting its discoverability and overall perception. The developer's commitment to addressing the identified issues will be crucial in swaying player opinion and ensuring Civilization 7's long-term viability.
