Atomfall, the British survival game developed by Rebellion, has proven to be a significant success, becoming "immediately profitable" upon its release on March 27, 2025, across PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S. Despite a substantial portion of its 2 million players accessing the game through Xbox Game Pass—meaning they did not purchase it directly—Rebellion has confirmed that the game recouped its development costs right away.
While exact sales figures remain undisclosed, Rebellion has highlighted that Atomfall marked their largest launch in terms of player numbers, a feat partly attributed to the exposure provided by Game Pass on Xbox and PC. The game's inclusion in the subscription service has not only helped it reach a broader audience but also facilitated positive word-of-mouth, which has further driven its success.
Rebellion's CEO, Jason Kingsley, shared insights in an interview with GamesIndustry.biz, emphasizing that the Game Pass launch avoided "cannibalizing" sales. He explained that the service guarantees developers a certain level of income, which helps mitigate the financial risks associated with game launches. Kingsley noted the viral potential of Game Pass, where players try the game, enjoy it, and recommend it to others, some of whom might then purchase the game outright.
Looking ahead, Rebellion is exploring opportunities for sequels or spin-offs while continuing to support Atomfall with ongoing post-launch content and DLC. Microsoft, while keeping specific business details confidential, benefits from games like Atomfall that attract and retain subscribers to Game Pass, which had 34 million users as of February 2024.
IGN's review of Atomfall praised it as a "gripping survival-action adventure that takes some of the best elements of Fallout and Elden Ring, and synthesizes them into its own fresh mutation," highlighting the game's unique appeal and successful integration of popular genre elements.
