Stray Kite Studios Unveils "Wartorn," a Real-Time Strategy Roguelite

Stray Kite Studios, a Dallas-based developer boasting veterans from renowned studios like BioShock, Borderlands, and Age of Empires, has announced its first original title: Wartorn. This real-time strategy roguelite, slated for a Spring 2025 Early Access launch on Steam and the Epic Games Store, promises a unique blend of tactical combat, challenging moral dilemmas, and a striking painterly art style.

Wartorn casts players into a fractured fantasy world, following the journey of two elven sisters striving for family reunification. Their quest will be fraught with peril, demanding strategic combat prowess and forcing players to confront difficult moral choices that impact the narrative.

Dynamic Destruction and Strategic Depth

The game's defining characteristic is its physics-driven environmental destruction. Unlike pre-scripted events, the battlefield dynamically changes based on player actions, ensuring high replayability and unique encounters. This unpredictable element complements the game's core theme: finding purpose amidst chaos. Co-founder and Creative Director Paul Hellquist emphasizes the game's emotional depth, stating, "We’ve poured our hearts into creating a game that not only entertains but also makes players think deeply about sacrifice, survival, and the bonds that unite us."

Tough Choices and Flexible Combat

Beyond the battlefield, players face constant moral dilemmas, such as choosing who to save or feed, further enhancing the story-driven roguelite experience. Combat itself offers considerable freedom, featuring a dynamic magic system that allows players to creatively combine elemental forces (fire, water, lightning) for diverse tactical applications. Spells interact uniquely with each other and the environment, adding another layer of strategic depth.

Progression, Accessibility, and Art Style

Wartorn's progression system incorporates persistent upgrades between runs, easing subsequent attempts. The game boasts a painterly aesthetic, enhancing the dramatic narrative. To ensure accessibility, Wartorn includes a feature to slow down gameplay, allowing for precise command input even amidst the chaos.

The game is currently on track for an Early Access release on Steam and the Epic Games Store in Spring 2025.
