Digital Foundry has recently disclosed the final technical specifications for the Nintendo Switch 2, highlighting concerns among developers about the significant impact of the new GameChat feature on system resources. During last month’s Nintendo Direct, the GameChat functionality was introduced, accessible via a press of the C button on the new Joy-Con. This feature allows players to watch each other play the same or different games, and with an integrated camera, even see one another. The built-in microphone is designed to perform reliably across various gaming environments, aiming to enhance the multiplayer experience through a comprehensive chat menu.
According to Digital Foundry, Nintendo offers developers a GameChat testing tool to simulate API latency and L3 cache misses, enabling them to assess the feature's impact without active GameChat sessions. This raises questions about whether game performance will be affected when GameChat is active. While ideally, system resource allocation should mitigate any impact, the provision of testing tools suggests developers must account for some performance hit.
Digital Foundry expressed interest in observing how GameChat might influence game performance, noting it as a point of concern for developers. The full extent of its impact won't be clear until the Switch 2 launches on June 5.
Additionally, Digital Foundry detailed the Switch 2's final tech specs. The console reserves 3GB for the Memory System, leaving 9GB available for games, a substantial increase from the original Switch's 0.8GB reservation and 3.2GB for games. As with other consoles, developers do not have access to the full GPU resources, some of which are reserved by the system.

The Switch 2 boasts a 7.9-inch wide color gamut LCD screen capable of displaying at 1080p resolution (1920x1080), a significant upgrade over the original Switch's 6.2-inch screen, the Switch OLED's 7-inch screen, and the Switch Lite's 5.5-inch screen. It also supports HDR10 and Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) up to 120 Hz, allowing games to achieve up to 120fps when supported by both the game and the display setup.
When docked, the Switch 2 can output games at 4K resolution (3840x2160) at 60fps or at 1080p/1440p (1920x1080/2560x1440) at 120fps. These enhanced graphics are powered by a custom processor developed by NVIDIA. For a deeper dive into the technical aspects, Digital Foundry's detailed specs are highly recommended.
