Hideo Kojima, the visionary behind the Metal Gear series, recently shared his reflections on creativity and the demanding nature of game development. His tweets revealed that Death Stranding 2: On the Beach is currently in "crunch time," a period he describes as incredibly challenging, both physically and mentally.
Kojima detailed the intense workload, encompassing tasks beyond game development, such as writing, interviews, and other non-game-related activities. While he didn't explicitly name Death Stranding 2 as the source of this crunch, it's the most likely candidate given its 2025 release date and the typical timing of crunch periods near the end of development. His other projects, OD and Physint, appear to be in earlier stages.
The most demanding period of game development—both physically and mentally—commonly known as “crunch time.” On top of mixing and Japanese voice recording, there’s an inevitable pile of other tasks: writing comments, explanations, essays, interviews, discussions, and… https://t.co/FrXRgaS748

Kojima's contemplation of his future creativity, however, seems less directly tied to this current crunch and more to a broader reflection spurred by reading a Ridley Scott biography. At 61, he questions how long he can maintain his creative drive, citing Ridley Scott's continued success at 87 as inspiration.
Despite the intense pressures, Kojima assures fans he's committed to continuing his work, despite a nearly four-decade career in the video game industry.
Death Stranding 2 gameplay footage, showcased in September, highlighted its characteristically bizarre elements, including a unique photo mode, dancing figures, and a character portrayed by George Miller. While a story introduction was released in January, much remains undisclosed, though Kojima has confirmed some character absences. The original Death Stranding, according to IGN's 6/10 review, presented a compelling world but struggled with gameplay consistency.
